Someone on the Internet.....................

I don't normally write about cyberspace crazies who try to upset my world with their rantings.  I learned long ago not to play house with those people because they would inevitably disturb my spirit.

So I was somewhat taken aback a couple of weeks ago when I was attacked on my own Face Book page for having posted some of my thoughts and feelings on the Republican nominee in the race for the US Presidency.  I poked fun at Romney's gaffes whilst he was in London and Israel but have not written or commented at all on his stance on abortion.  I did however share an abc news article on Todd Akin's remarks about the ability of a woman's body to shut itself down in order to prevent pregnancy in the event that she is being raped.  I could not let that one go without saying :

"Whether you are Pro Life or not, rape is rape and this man needs to keep his mouth shut. A woman's body can shut itself off from becoming pregnant after a rape?!! He makes George W Bush look positively intelligent. Misspoke? Idiot!"

Neither could I stop myself from asking if it was known that in 31 US States if a woman identifies her rapist, the rapist automatically has parental rights. If the woman wishes to abort he is entitled to have a say in that and if she does have the child and decides to go for adoption he also has a say in that.

Well who told me to say that?!!

I was told amongst other things that I didn't know what I was talking about, that I should stay out of American politics and called a weirdo by someone who said she couldn't understand for the life of her why I, as a foreigner,  would take such an interest in her country's politics adding that she would never be interested in the politics of my country.  There were a lot of insults and name calling from her so of course, I deleted and blocked her.

Why am I miffed?  Because one of the people who attacked me is a face to face friend. I could not believe what he wrote on my page to which I replied that if he did not like my views then he should stay away, not read what I have to say and not insult my friends because they happen to have different views to his.  He was an ardent  Obama supporter and campaigner in the last election and has since gone over to the other side.  I was far more disturbed though by the female who attacked me. She has been a 'friend' since 360 days and it was during that time that I provided the shoulder when two of her on line love affairs went bad.  I did not agree with what she was doing but at no time did I ever pass a comment or make a judgement because really, her personal life was none of my business.  I did however put up with her endless e mails, private messages, tears, rantings and ravings for quite some time.  So the type of insults from this woman who professes to be a Christian came as quite a shock.  I always knew that she could be somewhat difficult but never dreamed for one minute she would say what she did.

I am a political animal and I believe more people should have an interest in what goes on in the world instead of being confined to their own space.  I follow what happens politically in countries other than my own very closely.  I said years and years ago that Afghanistan and Pakistan would be major problem countries for the rest of the world and I make no apology for my interest in US politics because what happens in that country ultimately affects the rest of the world.  I also believe that people can disagree without becoming disagreeable but when personal insults fly then it becomes a horse of a different colour.

  1. politics is dangerous stuff...people will def fight...and usually it is over their own ignorance...sadly too many want to believe in something greater than the facts and when confronted with it they attack to defuse...

    1. Coming from a military family I learned very early in life that there are two subjects that are never to be discussed: religion and politics. Well, that went by the board as I aged!!

  2. Amen, Sister. I do find this personal attack mentality disturbing and a counselor friend of mine said that behavior comes from a deep seated feeling of inferiority. I think I can believe that.

Like you I thirst for knowledge and I do get involved with the politics of other countries especially if we share a border or allies. Long gone are the days I think we can be blissfully ignorant. It is a global economy and more and more a global governmental alliance.

BTW I noticed that a former mutual friend of ours that I had to not merely unfriend but block last year over a non-political matter now has only one friend in common with me. Evidently her behavior is such that many people have unfriended her.

And frankly, back on subject, I think the rest of the world needs to be very afraid of what is happening in this country. Maybe if you all called for UN intervention in our voting we could get some honesty.

    1. I'm sure you and your friend are right. That came out in the rant too. Calling in UN to oversee the election would put the US into the third world category although I hear what you're saying!

  3. Oh that's happened to me before too. A very long time and close friend and I began to disagree heavily about Muslims. He hates them irrationally and I don't. So every time I would post something if there was a way to attack me and my friends over any thing having to do with Islam off he would go. I deleted him once and he came apologizing on another web site, and I took him on as a contact again on facebook. We had a good relationship for many years and then one day he did it again and then disappeared off facebook. I don't know where he is nor what he is doing now nor do I care. The one thing I can't abide no matter what your beliefs are are full on attacks and hateful words over differences in beliefs and opinions. The world is on a roller coaster ride and people are getting scared because the changes are coming so fast. No one knows where the safety nets are anymore. Gonna be a bumpy ride so hold on and don't lend energy to the things you don't want.

    1. I simply cannot bear intolerance of race, creed and/or religion. I have a major problem with people who refuse to see further than their noses. I could not believe my ears when i watched a new York Times last week, A reporter asked a retiree living in Florida who he would be voting for. the reply was "I used to vote Democrat but not no more" (Note the language!) Reporter: "And why is that if I may ask"The man replied without batting an eye lid, "I don't like black people. I don't like them". And I have an on line Republican friend trying to tell me that there isn't a race problem in the US!!! There is a race problem world wide - I live in a country which boasts a multi-ethnic society and which Desmond Tutu branded, 'a rainbow country'. Try living here!

  4. I try to live and let live (and just delete negative comments). Did you know you can hide things on Facebook? That's saved me several times...out of sight, out of mind.

    1. i think one has to live like that - I have my views but I wouldn't impose them on anyone. I use that 'hide' button quite a lot!

  5. I wrote about Internet Ranters recently because although I have only minor experiences of them my daughter (who is very political) has loads. But I was talking about nutters who don't know me ... not nutters that do. How astonishing - I would press the delete button on them straight away. The thing is everyone is interested in US politics because they do actually effect us all eventually. Just because a huge number of people who live in that country are ignorant about the rest of the world doesn't mena the rest of the world is ignorant about them (and now I'll sit back and wait for the triade of abuse that statement will cause - feel free to delete the comment I won't take offense)

    1. I always considered myself fortunate that I hadn't experienced the rants and hate that some of my friends have done. You're right - many non Americans are interested in US politics for the very reasons given in and on this post. Instead of keeping my mouth shut once the rant started I did say that I wasn't insular which I don't suppose went down well!

Your comment is staying right here.

  6. oh my Bee shame on them. I don't know very much about all the world politics but I know this: It isn't anyone's business what goes on in private as long as it isn't detrimental to anothers well being. And as far as a woman's body? It's no one else's beeswax- I did not know about the 31 USA states- that's hideous and so very very wrong.
Heaven help us if we cannot say what we believe without fearing this sort of behavior.
