Make Me a Channel of Your Peace

The Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

The following is a favourite of mine, especially when sung. I make no apology for sharing it.

Many different versions exist but this is the most popular.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Amen.

St Francis

  1. I posted on this same prayer last year! It's my favorite. I wear a vintage gold St. Francis of Assisi medal always, to remind me.

    Peace.~x

  3. You are exactly right about it being more of a "ball", in fact that's what I called it last year. I changed the poster to read "ball"...it's more exciting! :)

  4. I'm not much of one for praying, having given up on faith. But this is one that has sentiments I have always liked, and in fact, posted on my own blog a couple of years ago too. If the whole world practiced what this says, can you even imagine how wonderful it would be? I too prefer singing it.

  5. In my early days as a three time winner in 12 step groups I survived with the Prayer of St. Francis and the Serenity Prayer. And as a child I loved many of the Psalms.

    I believe they give guidance without being preachy. Growing up in part in the south I dread revival tents and Christians on a mission.

    But believer or not the words of this prayer are a great guide for living one's life. And I agree with Becky. Wouldn't it be wonderful if all people at least tried to live their life like this.
